Extraction failed mess

Renato Silva
I tried upgrading to gettext 0.18.3.2 as explained in the other thread but even installing the specified components separately I get the extraction failed error, similar to what I have reported previously for libiconv. So I thought there could be a problem with my installation, then I reinstalled MinGW from scratch (just mingw32-base and msys-base) and I get the same error when installing libiconv (see below) and other packages. For some reason, package installation is often trying to extract files that have been extracted already, leading to this error. This is a generalized problem, anyone else has been experiencing these erros quite often like me?

Re: Extraction failed mess

Clemens Schäfermeier
I can confirm the problem, I followed the latest advice from Keith and
got the same errors as you reported.
Running now update / upgrade results in a number of other extraction
failures.

Hmm.  gettext-0.18.3.1 ... should be superseded by 0.18.3.2 ...

So why is it still trying to install this?  This is precisely the bogus
DLL package which I said *must not* be installed ... it is critically
broken, and should never have seen the light of day, yet it looks like
Earnie's libiconv package may declare a (broken) dependency on it.

Thanks for the heads up; I'll take a look.

Yep.  Give it time to reach the mirrors, and it should now be correct.

This was the only residual reference to this bogus package that grep
identified for me.  Please let me know if you discover any more.

Libiconv is fine now, but not gettext. Both the bin and dev components are trying to install locale files, resulting in errors:

Curious - I repeated the removal/installation and got the same errors.  No idea why it didn't happen the first time.

It is correct, that both should install message catalogues, ("locale
files", if you wish to think of them as such); what is *not* correct is
that they are trying to install *the same set* of message catalogues.

Here, mingw-get is correctly reporting a package conflict; the set of
gettext-tools.mo message catalogues had already been installed (albeit
incorrectly) when extracting the "bin" component, (when we should have
been extracting gettext-runtime.mo catalogues), and the conflict has
been detected when (correctly) attempting to extract them from the "dev"
archive.

Yes, it is curious; the conflict should have been reported.  I've now
repackaged the "bin" component archive, to deliver the correct set of
gettext-runtime.mo catalogues, so installation now proceeds correctly
for me.  However, I did notice some residual anomalies:

- I initially observed conflicts for the gettext-runtime.mo files; these
were already present in my installation tree, but running

  $ grep -l gettext-runtime.mo /mingw/var/lib/mingw-get/data/man*.xml

(from an MSYS shell) told me that mingw-get had no idea where they came
from; I want this probable conflict to be resolved such that mingw-get
has control of the installation of these files, so I ran

  $ rm `find /mingw/share/locale -name gettext-runtime.mo`
  $ mingw-get install -reinstall gettext-bin

to make it so.

- From the MSYS shell, running the command

  $ mingw-get install -reinstall gettext-{bin,dev}

which expands, (due to shell brace expansion), to

  $ mingw-get install -reinstall gettext-bin gettext-dev

with the latest releases of both of these component packages already
installed, should be equivalent to running

  $ mingw-get install -reinstall gettext-bin
  reinstall: gettext-0.18.3.2-1-mingw32-bin.tar.xz
   removing release gettext-0.18.3.2-1-mingw32-bin.tar.xz
   installing gettext-0.18.3.2-1-mingw32-bin.tar.xz

  $ mingw-get install -reinstall gettext-dev
  reinstall: gettext-0.18.3.2-1-mingw32-dev.tar.xz
   removing release gettext-0.18.3.2-1-mingw32-dev.tar.xz
   installing gettext-0.18.3.2-1-mingw32-dev.tar.xz

separately, in sequence.  However, whereas the separate invocations work
as expected, mingw-get appears to be mishandling the hybrid form, and
failing to schedule the removal of the "bin" component, (or likely all
but the last specified component), which results in conflicts from the
earlier specified component.  This looks like a bug in mingw-get, which
I'll need to investigate; for now, the work-around is to always specify
only one component package at a time, when performing any reinstallation
operation.

Dear list,

> Curious - I repeated the removal/installation and got the same errors.  No idea why it didn't happen the first time.
>

Please bear with me if my decision to top post and disregard the mailing
list etiquette is wrong. I am doing it because the long list of errors
are listed below, and may not be of interest. They can be skipped if
irrelevent. A comment will prevent it from happening again if it is
unwarrented.

The commands and errors listed at the bottom resulted from an update,
upgrade on 24.04.2014. I have been investigating the problem. Please let
me know if this problem contributes or if it is another problem. If it
is another problem, I do not want to hijack the thread and will start
another. Google turned up references to the error "CScript-Fehler". It
related them to necessary registry changes.

Error- XP sp3 crashed during mingw-get upgrade
- There was a conflict before and packages were not copies/ installed.
- Error. The crash probably occured by installing bin libutils.
Obviously the crash eradicated all evidence.

Please let me know if I made an update error, or if it is also caused by
this bug. Let me know how I can best proceed with the update.

The commands and errors follow.

Thanks for any helpful comments- Gary Gabriel

The German error message says, roughly, in English:

Cscript error: Access to Windows Script Host was for this
computer de
     activated. Please contact your administrator for more
To bring details in experience.

In other words, activate Windows Script Host and try again.

I don't know Windows Script Host, so you'll have to research that to
find out how to do it.

Good shot- for anyone interested, and in the same situation: the link
(in German) for the registry change is below [1].

A last question: the responses use cmd.exe console and Msys console for
mingw-get MinGW (not Msys). Can you confirm that either console is
satisfactory? or- is there a preferred or required console?

Thanks for the quick response - Gary

Not sure what you are asking here, but I always use mingw-get from a
cmd.exe console window.  I have never tried it from an Msys console
window.
